Gabriella felt herself floating, quiet and serene; stars surrounded her like a comforting blanket. She wondered if this was what death was like, if it were always so peaceful and quiet, for everyone who passed through. The Moon passed overhead, and then she saw the rush of sand and gravel just before slamming bodily into it. Something flashed and sparkled around her – the last of Josephine’s wards, she realized – and she slid like a comet, spraying dirt and dust as she slowly came to a stop. Sean’s footsteps shook the ground as he swaggered towards the spot where Gabriella lay stunned.
